Junior FIRST LEGO League
Created in partnership with the LEGO Group, Junior FIRST LEGO League (JFLL) is geared to children aged 6 to 9 years old and utilizes a modified FIRST LEGO League (FLL) framework. Teams of up to 6 children and an adult mentor receive a mini challenge, based on the annual FLL research project. Using an open-ended LEGO building set, they will design a model depicting an aspect of this year's "Power Puzzle" Challenge. Children will spend approximately one month exploring, investigating, designing and building a model made with LEGO bricks. In conjunction, teams create a "Show Me" poster that depicts the teams' experience during this process, through drawings and words. Learn more on the JFLL website.
Advice for New JFLL Coaches
JFLL Coordinator Margaret Lopez offers these words to new JFLL coaches:
"I would like to congratulate you for supporting your child's interest in learning more about teamwork & design skills through Junior First Lego League. (It's a fun way to learn!)
"I am a parent volunteer at Davis Elementary, and happily co-coached a team of six 3rd graders last year for JFLL. Based on last year's Nanoquest challenge, the kids were required to build three models at three different levels of scale (for example: ant hill - ant - ant leg). In addition to building the models the kids also make a 'Show-Me' poster describing their journey in working together in building their models.
"If you think you might be interested in coaching a JFLL team, read more information and check out the FAQs on the JFLL website. Whatever you do, don't be intimidated. JFLL is fun!"
2007 JFLL Expo
A JFLL Expo is an opportunity for teams to celebrate and share their experience with other teams, family and friends. The celebration includes
time to enhance the teams' current models and show their poster, meet with friendly "Reviewers" to share their experiences, and receive
recognition for their efforts.
Sixteen teams participated in the 2007 JFLL Expo, which was held in conjunction with the Central Texas FLL Championship Tournament. Says JFLL
Coordinator Margaret Lopez: "Each team should be proud of their accomplishments! Every team explored a new topic this year, designed and built
a model and poster and learned to work together as a team!"
