Sample FLL Team Budget

Your team's cost for participating in FLL will depend on several factors, including whether you own a LEGO MINDSTORMS kit and what type of kit you own, whether you will share a practice facility and Challenge Kit with another team, and whether you decide to build an "official" practice table. To help you predict your costs, here is an estimated FLL team budget for the 2007 season.

Budget Item2006 CostNotes
FLL International Team Registration $200/team
Central Texas FLL Championship Tournament Registration $65/team
FLL Challenge Kit (playing surface and special parts) $65/kit   1
Robotic Team Challenge Kit $325/kit   2
Miscellaneious Batteries & Practice Table $50
Shipping and Handling $20
Total $350-$700/team   3

NOTES
  1. Challenge Kit contains playing surface and special parts to make the playing field. To reduce costs, this kit can be shared by several teams that practice at the same site. The playing field can be set up on the floor or a large banquet type table, or you may build an "official" FLL practice table.
  2. The Robotic Team Challenge Kit provides a small, programmable LEGO computer and enough motors and parts to make a machine. Teams with a LEGO MINDSTORMS kit or DACTA Robolab Team Challenge kit may use their exiting kit with the addition of an extra motor ($15), light sensor ($15) and rotation sensor ($17). The $260 kit is simply the DACTA Robolab kit plus the extra motor, sensors, and a set of batteries.
  3. The bottom end of this range applied to teams that already had a LEGO MINDSTORMS kit before the season started, while the upper end applied to those who purchased a kit as part of their team start-up cost.
